Buckling in wooden engineered flooring refers to a deformation where the boards begin to warp or lift from the subfloor, typically forming noticeable bumps or ridges along the surface. This happens when the wood expands due to excessive moisture, temperature fluctuations, or inadequate acclimation before installation.


Causes of Buckling

1. Excess Moisture

Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture from the air. When engineered wood absorbs too much moisture (from high humidity, spills, or water leakage), it swells, which can lead to buckling.

2. Inadequate Acclimation

Before installation, wood should acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the room where it will be laid. If this step is skipped or done improperly, the wood may expand or contract after installation, leading to warping.

3. Improper Installation

Insufficient expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room can cause the wood to push against walls or other obstructions when it expands. This pressure can result in buckling.

4. Subfloor Issues

If the subfloor isn’t dry, level, or properly prepared, it can affect how the wood interacts with the surface underneath, potentially leading to uneven expansion or buckling.


How to Prevent Buckling

1. Control Humidity

Keep indoor humidity levels stable (ideally between 35% and 55%) to prevent excess moisture from accumulating in the wood. Use a dehumidifier if necessary, especially in areas prone to high humidity.

2. Acclimate the Wood

Allow the engineered flooring to sit in the room for at least 48-72 hours before installation to ensure it adjusts to the local temperature and humidity conditions. This minimizes the risk of expansion after installation.

3. Proper Installation

Ensure an adequate expansion gap (usually around 1/4 inch) around the perimeter of the floor, including at doorways and under baseboards. This gap allows the floor to expand without causing pressure buildup.

4. Maintain a Dry Subfloor

Make sure the subfloor is dry, level, and clean. If necessary, use a moisture barrier or underlayment designed to prevent moisture from rising from below.

5. Proper Ventilation

In rooms with high moisture or temperature fluctuations (like bathrooms or kitchens), ensure proper ventilation or consider using moisture-resistant flooring options.



By following these steps, you can greatly reduce the risk of buckling and extend the life of your engineered wood floors.
