Ash Characteristics

Ash, scientific name: Fraxinus spp., including Fraxinus excelsior, F. angustifolia, F. chinensis, F. mandshurica and F. americana, is widely distributed in North America, Asia and Europe.

The heartwood is a light to medium brown color, though darker streaks can also be seen. Sapwood can be very wide, and tends to be a beige or light brown; not always clearly or sharply demarcated from heartwood. It has a medium to coarse texture similar to oak. The grain is almost always straight and regular, though sometimes curly or figured boards can be found.

Ash has fairly good strength properties for its weight, and is also shock resistant (0.68 g/cm3 at 12% MC, Janka hardness 6580N). Both the mechanical and grains are similar to white oak. But the ash wood rays are less conspicuous.

*Top layer thickness is measured prior to the finishing process. Finishing processes such as brushing may affect the overall thickness.

** Based upon the use of formaldehyde-free glues, our timber floors are in full compliance with F**** formaldehyde emissions regulations.
