Black Walnut Characteristics
Black walnut, scientific name: Juglans nigra, a cherished wood species distributed in Eastern United States.
The heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white that is less frequently utilized in flooring. Figured grain patterns such as curl, crotch, and burl are also seen. The grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. It has a medium texture and moderate natural luster.
The strength properties of black walnut is moderate. The Janka hardness is 4490N. The specific gravity at 12% MC is 0.61 g/cm3. It is absolutely one of the most popular wood species in wood industry for its beautiful color and pattern with a lot of potential. Both rotary and sawn lamella are used in flooring.
