Black Cherry Characteristics
Black cherry, or American cherry, scientific name: Prunus serotina, mainly distributed in Eastern North America.
The heartwood is a light pinkish brown when freshly cut, darkening to a medium reddish brown with time and upon exposure to light. Wide sapwood is a pale yellowish color. Distinctive gum veins are occasionally seen. The grain is usually straight—with the exception of figured pieces with curly grain patterns. It has a fine, even texture with moderate natural luster.
Black cherry as flooring species is relatively soft. The specific Gravity at 12% MC is 0.56 g/cm3. The Janka Hardness is 4230N. The black cherry lamella on engineered flooring tops can remain both the unique melting tough and strong mechanical stability.
