Merbau, scientific name Intsia spp., including I. bijuga and I. palembanica, a tropical species that is widely distributed in Southeast Asia and Australia.
Merbau has an orangish-brown color when freshly cut, which ages to a darker reddish-brown. Color between boards can be highly variable. There are also small yellow mineral deposits found throughout the wood, making it easier to separate from other lookalikes. The grain is straight to interlocked. Texture is coarse, with a moderate natural luster.
Merbau has excellent strength characteristics that the Janka Hardness is 7620N. Specific gravity at 12% MC is 0.82 g/cm3. The excellent stability and rich resource make it ideal for flooring.
*Top layer thickness is measured prior to the finishing process. Finishing processes such as brushing may affect the overall thickness.
** Based upon the use of formaldehyde-free glues, our timber floors are in full compliance with F**** formaldehyde emissions regulations.
