Jatoba Characteristics

Jatoba, scientific name: Hymenaea courbaril, a common flooring species from Central America and southern Mexico.

Jatoba flooring is highly prized for its dramatic color. Heartwood varies from a light orangish brown to a darker reddish brown, sometimes with contrasting darker grayish brown streaks. Color tends darken upon exposure to light. Sapwood is a light grayish yellow, clearly demarcated from the heartwood. Grain is typically interlocked, with a medium to coarse texture and a good natural golden luster.

Jatoba wood is extremely hard, scoring 11950N on the Janka Hardness Scale. That makes Jatoba flooring durable to resisting scratches, dents, and patterns from foot traffic. The low-cost price also makes it one of the most welcome species for flooring.

*Top layer thickness is measured prior to the finishing process. Finishing processes such as brushing may affect the overall thickness.
