beliwood Characteristics

Beli, scientifc name: Julbernardia pellegriniana, is a huge tropical tree that distributed in Cameroon and Gabon, Africa.

The heartwood of Beli is a light brown, commonly with alternating darker stripes throughout.  Mineral/gum deposits occasionally present at heartwood. Quartersawn sections in particular exhibit a Zebrawood-like appearance. Wide sapwood is a pale yellow and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood, and lacks the darker stripes. Grain is usually interlocked, with a uniform medium to coarse texture, and moderate natural luster.

As a tropical hardwood, Beli is also hard and dense. The Janka hardness scores 6580N. The specific gravity is 0.77 g/cm3, which is similar to white oak. Beli is usually seen as a more economical substitute for Zebrawood.

*Top layer thickness is measured prior to the finishing process. Finishing processes such as brushing may affect the overall thickness.
